System Description
An aerial people mover uses the same technology and components as a chairlift at a ski area. The typical urban people mover uses a single steel haul rope loop that continually circulates at a constant speed around bullwheels located at the end terminals. An electric motor drives the bullwheel at the drive terminal. The bullwheel at the opposite terminal is mounted on a movable carriage that is under tension, thus providing uniform rope tension at that terminal.

The haul rope is supported by steel towers along the alignment of the system. These towers are typically spaced at 350' and vary in height dependent on the terrain and obstructions along the alignment. Sheaves support the rope on either side of the tower and guide the carriers past each of the towers.
